The collection contains 17 letters by Fairfax, 1850-1861, and one by his uncle Richard Snowden, 1850, to family and friends in Maryland and Washington, D. C. They describe the voyage from home via the isthmus of Panama, and life in California and Nevada during the gold rush. With them are photographs of Fairfax and his wife Ada, copies of his obituaries and an article regarding him.
